The first week of classes is over and we hope you are all holding up well now that the second week of classes has started! Last Friday we had the first SAMS pub-night of the year which was a great success and we had lots of fun! Thanks to all who came and we hope to be able to organise more events in the near future. Last Thursday we had the first SAMS meeting at which some of you expressed their interest in joining the executive committee. SAMS is still looking for more masters students who want to be part of the executive committee for this academic year. Any masters student at the IoA can apply to be part of the executive (that includes conservation, cultural heritage and museum studies students among others not just archaeology masters). Being part of the committee gives you the opportunity to be directly involved in the masters experience outside of the lectures and get to know the Institute of Archaeology better by working directly with the staff and lecturers. It also looks good as an extracurricular activity on your CV! If you are interested in filling any position, you can fill in and send the attached nomination form to the SAMS email address ([email protected]) saying which position you would like to hold and why. For more details on the role of each executive you can take a look at the SAMS constitution on the SAMS website. Below is a list of all available executive positions:
At the end of the meeting the new SAMS executive council for this year will be selected. If more persons than required apply for the same position, or there is any opposition, we will hold a vote for that position. All SAMS members, that is all IoA masters students (i.e. you!), can vote even if not on the executive committee. Any masters students present at the meeting, even if they haven't sent a nomination form, will be given the opportunity to run for an executive position. Also, do not forget to sign up for our social media. A new Facebook group has been created for this years masters students so make sure to join it and keep an eye on the existing facebook group as well, since there you can network with ex-master students alumni who will be more than willing to help you with any queries you might have about your studies. Hope to see you on Wednesday,

SAMS (Society for Archaeological Master Students) would like to welcome all the new Institute of Archaeology (IoA) masters students! Hope you have now started getting your bearings around UCL and the IoA and maybe started forming new friendships. As an outgoing IoA masters students, we assure you that you have a really exciting and fulfilling year ahead of you, both academically and socially. SAMS is a great way of getting involved with the Institute of Archaeology, meet fellow master students on different degrees and have some input into the social and academic events for this year. Last year we organised social events, workshops, outings, talks, parties, pub nights, fundraising events, bake sales and the third annual SAMS conference. So many great memories! We are sure that this year, you will not fall short in perpetuating the SAMS legacy! SAMS are now accepting nominations from masters students who wish to be part of this years executive committee. We are looking for enthusiastic and energetic people who want to be involved in setting up and organising events for your year. Any masters student at the IoA can apply to be part of the executive (that includes conservation and museum studies students among others not just archaeology masters). So if you are interested in filling any position, you can fill in and send the attached nomination form to the SAMS email address ([email protected]) saying which position you would like to hold and why. For more details on the role of each executive you can take a look at the SAMS constitution on the SAMS website. Below is a list of all available executive positions:
A first informal meeting will be held this Thursday 08/10/2015 at 4pm in room 410 (4th floor) at the IoA. Some members from last years SAMS committee will be present at the meeting. You can ask any questions you might have about the workings of the executive positions and SAMS in general. It is all very informal so don't shy out! At the end of the meeting, even if you still haven't sent a nomination form, you will be able to choose the executive position you want to hold. If more persons than required apply for the same position, or there is any opposition, we will hold a vote for that position. All SAMS members, that is all IoA masters students (i.e. you!), can vote even if not on the executive committee. So if you are interested in getting involved or even just in seeing what it is all about, please come along to the first meeting this Thursday. If you are interested but cannot make this slot feel free to send SAMS an email ([email protected]) and if there are still openings a second election will be held next week. Also, do not forget to sign up for our social media. A new Facebook group has been created for this years masters students so make sure to join it and keep an eye on the existing facebook group as well, since there you can meet the ex-master students who will be more than willing to help you with any queries you might have. Also, keep your eyes open for this years first SAMS pub night at the end of this week, where you can start to get to know each other over a good London pint!
