SAMS would like to say a huge thank you to everyone that attended or was involved with yesterday's conference! The speakers were fantastic and I certainly learned a lot over the course of the day. Thank you very much for your informative and enjoyable presentations. We really appreciate the time you took in preparing and presenting your research at our event. Attached is the conference abstract booklet in case you would like to take a look at the content of the sessions. Jane, Louise and Tristan did a fine job of chairing their sessions. A special thanks goes out to the SAMS team: Marvin, Erik, Omar, Bella, Berceste, Emese, Hester and Olivia. The catering crew did a superb job of keeping everyone fed and provided a lovely space for people to relax in. It was rewarding to meet so many speakers and guests from the UCL Institute of Archaeology and other institutions. Our guest speakers, Professor David Wengrow and Dr Gabe Moshenska did us a great honour with their informative and entertaining talks.

Relax and celebrate the end of classes with good times and good drinks!
Meet us in Mully's Basement Bar on Friday March 27 from 7:00 pm for 3 for 2 drinks! We are also offering a free bottle of beer to the first 60 people who join us! Interested in knowing more about the current developments of commercial archaeological projects within urban contexts and Museum of London Archaeology’s activities?
SAMS is organising a workshop with Dr. James Dixon, a Built Heritage Consultant working for MOLA, on the changing relationship between archaeology and planning systems, providing those interested in working in commercial archaeology - and those who remain skeptical! - useful information on the latest developments in the industry. The workshop will be held Tuesday 24th March in Room 612 from 6 to 7 pm. Free drinks and chats will follow in room 609! All welcome! SAMS would like to invite both faculty members and Ph.D. students to hold a formal debate on a heated archaeological topic sometime in May. As such, we would like to ask the student body to propose debate questions they believe would be interesting to see their professors discuss/debate. Below are a few examples:
1. Should archaeology be approached as a science? To what extent is the scientific method applicable or useful in archaeology? 2. Do phenomenological approaches to archaeology contribute significantly to our understanding of past human behaviour and/or cognition? Is phenomenology even applicable to archaeological practice? 3. Should museums have the right to sell archaeological and historical artefacts? Do these actions encourage the black market sale of archaeological and historical artefacts? 4. Should amateur archaeology be encouraged, or should archaeology be strictly practised by academics and professionals? To what extent is amateur archaeology harmful to archaeology as a discipline? Please comment ideas below, or email them to our official SAMS email at [email protected]. Cheers! A message from SAMS to everyone who is looking for a job after graduation and is interested to hear what is out there for archaeologists:
The annual 'Career in Ruins' event, taking place on the 11th of March from 1-5pm in Room 612, is chance for all students to come and listen to current industry members talk about their professions and to hear about all the interesting applications for your hard-earned archaeology degree! Speakers include UCL lecturers and representatives from English Heritage, the Brent Museum, archaeological commercial units and UCL Careers which reflect the variety of opportunities out there! Following the talks will be a wine reception to give you a chance to speak with the presenters informally. For more information see the poster below and the facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/616053365162645 Please note: do come along to the talks of your choice but be aware that we are in room 612 which seats around 60 people – so for the more popular talks this will fill up quickly. You may come and go between talks, but please don’t leave during talks. Any questions do email Charlotte Frearson [email protected] for more details! Hope to see you all there!
